Creative Director Jan Theysen and Senior Game Designer Elliott Verbiest discuss how KING Art Games navigated the tricky decisions of reviving a beloved series after its 2017 hibernation.
From Iron Harvest to Dawn of War
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War had been in hibernation since 2017, and its most recent installment was far from universally well-received. When KING Art Games was handed the task of bringing it back, there were a lot of tricky decisions to navigate and an eager but picky fanbase to face.
It was KING Art’s previous game, Iron Harvest, that caught the attention of someone at Games Workshop. The team was very open about the development of Iron Harvest, their previous RTS game, showing a lot of what they could do with the engine and their art capabilities. Someone at Games Workshop saw that and contacted the studio.
